Texas Kindergarten Entry Assessment
Required Measures for ECDS for 2022-23
Updated 7-21-22
For this school year, the Texas Kindergarten Entry Assessment (TX-KEA) on CLI Engage offers several child
progress monitoring tools and reports to aid teachers and schools in instructional planning and data analysis,
including the beginning-of-year statewide kindergarten literacy screener. The following information,
developed in collaboration with the Texas Education Agency (TEA), aims to assist school districts and open
enrollment charter schools (LEAs) using CLI Engage to select child progress monitoring measures that meet
state guidelines, provide rich data for schools and communities, and help teachers support children in the
classroom.
For this school year, LEAs using TX-KEA on CLI Engage will report a composite score for the statewide
literacy screener and individual measure scores into the Early Childhood Data System (ECDS), part of the
Texas Student Data System (TSDS). The table on the following page shows the TX-KEA measures that
comprise the composite score. This composite score is exported by CLI Engage into ECDS, allowing LEAs to
load their composite scores through the TSDS ECDS application.
Should LEAs choose to submit data from subtests outside the required literacy screener (i.e. mathematics,
health and wellness), they must indicate this preference through a survey from CLI. Additional information
will be provided to LEA administrators in Fall 2022.
ECDS Reporting
Please review the following information when selecting the TX-KEA measures that will be assessed in
kindergarten classrooms:
Texas Education Code (TEC) §28.006 requires LEAs to administer an assessment instrument that
measures emergent literacy-reading skills. LEAs using TX-KEA to fulfill this requirement must
administer all three measures that comprise the composite score for the
kindergarten literacy
screener score (Vocabulary, Letter Names, and Spelling).
In addition to the kindergarten literacy screener composite score, ECDS reports from CLI Engage
will also include raw scores for Vocabulary, Letter Names, and Spelling that will be used to calculate
the new
statewide kindergarten readiness score
by TEA.
Reporting requirements will only include BOY measures (referred to as Wave 1 in CLI Engage).
Recommendations
LEAs are recommended to assess in all five ECDS domains and report this information to ECDS. For
TX-KEA, specific measures aligned to ECDS reports for all five domains are in the table on the
following page. If your LEA administers these measures using TX-KEA, those scores can be included
in your ECDS submission.
